First XNA tests...

Postby Silmaryls on Fri Oct 06, 2006 10:03 pm

Ok I tried the XNA beta two days ago.

It looks really promising but I am really disapointed : I began to change Brume Impl in order to make a simple test....and I stopped after only 10 minutes
In fact there is no .X support...there is no content pipeline at all !

We will have to wait....

Now the content pipeline is int it...but what about DirectX 10 ?
Will the XNA pro platform be DirectX 10 ?

No XNA and DirectX 10 will be 2 different things :/
I haven't really tested xna for the moment but in fact I don't really want to use it I think I will prefer MDX :)

Well I am not so sure...I read that Microsoft is preparing a professional version of XNA. And I think that it would be impossible to avoid a DirectX10 API in a professional platform.

So my guess is they will deliver the DirectX10 support in next XNA pro release. The only alternative for game engines will be other DirectX10/C# well designed wrappers like this one : http://www.codeplex.com/MD3D10

I also think that an XNA integration is possible but it's not so easy due to the content pipeline.

So wait & see....

Check the date Rubbish : my first post was on 06 Oct 2006

I just added some considerations recently. The last post is about the XNA professional platform that is awaited this year (? not sure about this one)

Something to keep in mind is that Microsoft is intending to phase out Managed DirectX in favor of XNA, which leaves long-term maintenance of MDX products like this in a bit of a tough spot. The only alternative that I am aware of is SlimDX, but I admit I haven't had the time yet to personally check it out, although the primary developer is someone with a pretty good reputation.

Yes your're right about MDX. XNA is not an objective to me for the moment (let's say not the current version) and the content pipeline is not well suited for external engines.
Currently I'm working on my own wrappers but SlimDx may also be an option (but it still needs time to offer more features).

XNA content handling is available

Postby jeskeca on Fri Apr 04, 2008 6:31 pm

I'm not sure if this is something that changed after the initial XNA release or not, but AFAIK, XNA supports two native content formats, .x (directx) and .fbx (autodesk)

Yup,

This topic is pretty outdated now
XNA has a content framework but it was not present in the initial release.
